These “twin sister” brick apartments serve as an anchor for the southwest corner of the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood, with stately columns and accents that reflect the popular neoclassical style of their era. Built in1902 and originally designed by the renowned Proudfoot & Bird Architects, the buildings fell victim to thoughtless remodeling and neglect that plagued the neighborhood for many decades. The renovation is a major milestone in the continuing redevelopment of Sherman Hill, just north of downtown Des Moines.
Our work included near total interior demolition to remove intrusive remodeling. We maintained important historic features, restored structural integrity and original unit densities and provide modern amenities. Units were returned to the original layout, with a contemporary interpretation to allow for today’s modes of apartment living.
